Your Vehicle And Garage Security

Garage Door Clicker

Most people believe that their garage is the safest place to store their cars. Yet, no assumption is airtight. Even when you place the car in the garage, you might still risk facing damage. What can you do to make the space as secure as possible? Where can you turn for help if damage does come to pass?

Garage security and vehicle safety is important. Consider this space a separate setting within the home. Treat it uniquely when thinking about securing the area.

Ways to Increase Garage Security

Your garage needs a strong security system. You also need to take steps to keep the vehicle safe within the structure. When securing the structure, think about both interior and exterior safety risks.

  • Make sure your garage door works appropriately. It should close securely, and lock as needed.
  • Place locks on all entryways to the garage, including exterior doors and windows.
  • Keep the garage well-lit. Consider placing motion-sensor lighting around the area.
  • Make sure your home's security system extends into the garage. Your burglar, fire and carbon monoxide alarms should all reach inside the structure. Ensure the alarm system works and consider installing cameras near the garage.
  • Always know the dimensions of the garage. Some are not large enough to accommodate larger vehicles. Don't try to park an oversized vehicle in a space where it will not fit.
  • When storing items in the garage, make sure they do not encroach on the parking space. Do not pile items so close to the car that they might topple onto the vehicle.
  • Take care when suspending items above the vehicle. You don't want something to fall onto the roof of the car.
  • Keep the floor clean. You don't want materials to fall on the floor that might damage your tires, such as nails or screws.

Does Insurance Pay for Damage in the Garage?

Let's suppose that a thief breaks into your garage and steals your car. What happens when you need to call your insurer for a claim?

Generally, you will need to look to your car insurance, rather than your home insurance, to pay for the damage. However, your policy will likely need comprehensive insurance to qualify for a theft claim.

Comprehensive coverage will pay for damage from non-wreck hazards. If something happens to your vehicle while in the garage, it will likely fall under this coverage.

Talk to an Remco Insurance agent today. All car insurance varies, so check your specific coverage to see how it protects you in the garage.
