Does Your Fishing Equipment Have Insurance Coverage?

Man Casting Fishing Rod

Fishing is one of boating's great pastimes. However, it doesn't always come cheap. If you like to fish, you probably have a considerable inventory of equipment. That's a fair amount of monetary investment. What if something were to happen your gear? You wouldn't be able to fish, and you'd likely have to spend a good bit of money replacing it.

For the committed fisherman, there's hope. Your boat insurance policy might help you protect your fishing gear. You are already protecting your vessel, why not take your coverage a step further?

Pull out your policy. See how it addresses your gear. It might be something to ask your Amco & Remco Insurance agent about the next time you update your coverage.

Insuring Fishing Gear

Fishing gear does not come cheap, especially if your build up a collection. Indeed, a high-end rod might cost well over $100. That's a lot of money when you count each item individually. How do you protect this equipment when you take it on your boat?

Many boat insurance policies address fishing gear. Some offer personal possessions coverage with every policy. Fishing gear will often fall among this coverage. Policies will likely cover:

  • Rods & Reels
  • Tackle
  • Trolling motors

If an unavoidable accident damages your gear, you might be able to recoup some of the losses. For example, were someone to steal your gear or the boat itself, this coverage might kick in. You won't have to pay out of pocket to replace your rod and other items.

Still, not all policies automatically cover your personal possessions or fishing gear. You might have to add a policy rider to your existing boat coverage to qualify for this protection. Also, most personal possessions coverage will come with dollar limits. You might face a total limit on your gear, as well as a per-item limit on your possessions. For example, your policy might provide a total of $2,000 in fishing gear coverage, but will only pay $200 for each rod.

Therefore, insuring your gear will require coordination between you and your Amco & Remco Insurance agent. First, make sure you can add coverage for fishing gear to your policy. Then, discuss the value of each item with your Amco & Remco Insurance agent. They can guide you in setting up the correct policy limits. That way, you won't have to worry about unnecessary losses on your next fishing trip.
